spiders and fireplaces

Enid was ready for bed, she had had her warm milk and been tucked into bed by her parents, they were both going back downstairs to a party.

Her mum was wearing a hula skirt and her dad a flower boa and a straw hat, she wondered what the theme was of this party. Her mum turned off the light as they went out of the room, blowing her a kiss goodnight.

It was dark and she was sleepy, she closed her eyes and started to dream, but then she started to twist and turn, too many films going round in her head, she awoke with a start and sat bolt upright. Looking round the room her eyes picked out the fireplace and thought she saw a hand emerging from the grate stretching out into the room, wide eyed she lied back down on her bed and shut her eyes tight. She started to hear scratching, Enid looked around the room again, nothing, looking down the side of her mattress a family of big black spiders with huge legs were marching towards her at the head of the bed, she acted instinctively and almost jumped out of bed, she climbed out of her bunk bed and ran out of the room to find her parents.

The distraction of bright colours and funny clothes almost put her off her stride, eventually she did find them, they were huddled round the log burner in the kitchen drinking brightly coloured drinks with umbrellas and had half swapped costumes. They put her back to bed after checking for hands and spiders, tucking her in and told her to have happy dreams, and that is what she did.

Spiritual school

Georgia woke up on a sunny school morning and wanted to go back to sleep, she was not looking forward to giving in her history homework, it was on Henry the VIII and his wives. She had to pick one and write and essay on them, she chose Catherine Howard because she was the youngest and had an affair with someone fit. She had gotten half way through it and decided she needed to ask her friend for her opinion and read more text books.
The sun was streaming in and she started to move back under her duvet, it was nice and warm and cosy.
Downstairs she could hear her Aunt on the phone talking to an estate agent about her own house, they were agreeing over prices.
Then she could hear a familiar voice coming up from down stairs.

‘George’ it was aimed at her

It said it in a whiny kind of way, it sounded quite like a cartoon character she liked, Mickey Mouse sprung to mind. She smiled to see her little brother as mickey mouse in her head .The voice shouted again.

‘Come on lazy, breakfast’

It was her brother Sean’s voice bellowing up from the floorboards and it made her wince, as she was putting on her dressing gown she asked herself why did she agree to babysit, she was meant to go out tonight with friends, but now she couldn’t she had to stay in, it’s not fair.
Her parents were on a second honeymoon in Venice having a wonderful time, seeing stuff ,while she had to stay here with her younger brother. She would have loved to have gone with them, the food, the sun and the sexy Italians. the only reason why she said she would do it is because of the
Money they said they would give her when they got back.
When she finally emerged in the kitchen she saw a presentable little boy in school uniform in a grey blazer and shorts, with a white shirt and red baseball cap, she preferred it to hers, they went to different schools. She sat down at the other end of the breakfast bar in her blue dressing gown that kept coming undone to reveal stripy pyjamas.
She had some toast then ran upstairs to get dressed, and grabbed an apple on the way out of the house for school.
When she got to school she was 20 minutes early so she went up to the library to do this
Homework she hadn’t yet finished.

‘Morning George’

Said her friend Sally

‘Morning Sally’

‘I’m just doing the homework for your dad, before he bites my head off’

‘He is in a good mood today, so he shouldn’t be too bad’ said Sally

‘The party was very good last night, sorry you couldn’t make it’ Sally said

‘I know, still at least we can have a good night out when my parents come home, I will have

Money!’ George said

George glanced at her new watch, she’d got it for her birthday, and it was nine o’clock, she panicked slightly looking at her half finished homework.

‘I think we better get to register before they come and get us’ George said.

When they got to their tutor room there was no one there and on inspection of the entire school
They found no one, it felt very quiet and eerie, so they regrouped and came up with a plan, this was silly. So they decided to stay in the library and she could finally finish this damn essay.
Sally was watching the television
when George heard a noise and turned the television down low.

‘Did you hear that?’

Asked George

‘No, hear what?’

‘Maybe it was nothing, my imagination.’ George said

After a few minutes Sally heard a low groan and shot a look at George who was looking at her,
And the library doors burst open making them jump, all that was visible was a bright yellow light
Emanating from the corridor, the television was levitating in the air above their heads, they panicked looking around for somewhere to hide and went and hid under the computer tables. Then books started levitating off the shelves towards them, ironically open history books were coming towards them, open on the Catherine Howard page of the research she had missed. The computers also turn themselves on, they were automatically playing tetris and the lights kept flicking on and off.
Then from the light outside came a deep booming voice

‘Where is your headmaster I want to talk to him’

The girls just looked at one another for a moment stunned before responding to the request.

‘ We don’t know where he is , we haven’t seen anyone this morning’

‘who are you any way?’ said a shaky Sally trying to be assertive.

‘ I don’t answer questions from students, I ask them’ the voice sounded shaky but firm

‘Well that’s just rude’ said George sounding finding her voice

‘You are a Child who should be in class’ said the voice

Then the room started to go cold, and objects started to fly around them again. The heavier history books were aimed towards them, they hurt when impacted with their heads. George picked one up that mentioned history of the school in the 1920’s and put in in her bag.
The activity calmed down again and Sally was looking around at the devastation and noticed what looked like another teenager in the corner of the room by biographies, she tapped George on the shoulder and they both looked over, the teenager looked transparent and was wearing a pinafore dress, dainty old fashioned shoes and had her hair in a plait, with a big scary grin on her face and red eyes staring at the door where the light was still shining, looking round there were more of them randomly appearing out of nowhere and just staring at the open door.

‘ Where is your headmaster’

The voice came again, then all of a sudden the transparent children started screaming, high pitched and deafening, the noise was so loud, it made the TV and windows smash, and the computers explode. The girls were still hiding under the computers and holding their heads, their ears couldn’t take any more noise and they passed out.
When they woke up the library was back to normal, it was clean, neat and tidy. There was no evidence of ghosts or bright light and the computer, TV and windows were all fixed.

‘Sally you al-right?’

‘Yeh, what just happened?’

‘No idea, but my head is killing me’

‘Oh crap, is that the bell?’

At that they picked up their bags and ran as fast as they could for their first lesson.

‘Morning girls, glad you could join us’

‘Sorry sir, the library door stuck’

‘likely story George, sit down’

‘ Right today we are going to research the history of this school, does any body no anything about the history?’

‘ Sir can I ask a question, did a class of girls kill their headmaster in the 1920’s?’

‘ Yes, that did happen, well done George’

‘ Yes a class of 14 year old girls, there were 15 of them and they battered him to death with their text books, they were the school bullies and he was a quiet unassuming headmaster who was a bit of a pusher over, he was constantly looking for another teacher to take over from him’

‘It might just have been better if he had just grown some sir’

‘ Yes thank you Sam. Moving on to other history…..

George found his voice trailing off and she lost interest as he talked about the school buildings and the second world war. She was seated by the window into the hallway and was gazing down it when she noticed a transparent girl with red eyes and her finger to her lips just smiling at her, and then disappeared. George looked down at the book that she picked up in the library, and it was open on the page of the girls all smiling, with the headmasters scared face looking up at her as if saying help me, please, help me.
