The Christmas lights

The Christmas lights

The Christmas lights flickered on and off at seconds intervals, some bright white , some red with red ruby tips. They enjoyed themselves being hung around an antique looking mirror in a moderately fashionable clothes shop.

All brothers and sisters together, flashing their little hearts out for anyone caring to look at them, and make funny noises like ‘ooh’ and ‘ah’. ‘Life’ was good, Christmas was their time for the year to shine, to do the thing they do best. Th rest of the year this particular set of Christmas lights was wrapped around a postal tube and put in a dark dry cupboard, but at least they were looked after, according to a Christmas fairy not all rope lights and baubles were as fortunate, some were kept in shocking conditions, lights were tangled in a mess, shoved in a bag and not shown any love, until a human decided to put them up once a year and realised that they were in such a tangle that they just threw them out into the garbage and the owner just bought new ones, it was a heartbreaking tale, they hoped it would never happen to them.

One of the many brothers and sisters on this particular rope of lights was a bit of a show off and was determined to shine as brightly as they could, making the others look quite flat and forlorn, but like any light that tries it’s hardest to shine the brightest light was short lived and soon blew out, but with so many lights it was not replaced instantly, so the brightest had to endure being the dullest for once, despite being warned about out shining the others, it was now dejected by the family until someone noticed and took pity on the little light and decided to change the bulb.
